EPA Method 0011

Sampling for Selected Aldehyde and Ketone Emissions from Stationary Sources

This method is applicable to the determination of DRE, or Destruction and Removal Efficiency, of the following analytes: Formaldehyde, Acetaldehyde, Acetophenone, Isophorone, and Propionaldehyde. Gaseous and particulate pollutants are withdrawn isokinetically from an emission source and are collected in aqueous acidic 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine. Formaldehyde present in the emissions reacts with the 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine to form the formaldehyde dinitrophenylhydrazone derivative. The dinitrophenylhydrazone derivative is extracted, solvent-exchanged, concentrated, and then analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) according to Method 8315 or other appropriate technique.
