Andrew Smith is the Manager of Joint Arthroplasty for Element Materials Technology in Cincinnati, OH. At Element, Andrew’s group conducts material characterization and product qualification tests for replacement knee, hip, shoulder and other joint implants. In addition, he oversees Element Cincinnati’s tribology and metallurgical labs, as well as the site’s safety program.
At the University of Toledo, Andrew earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering with a focus on Solid Mechanics and Biomechanics. Since then, he has worked in orthopedics and biomechanics in different roles. Andrew has been performing and managing the medical device testing projects at Element Cincinnati. These range from small feasibility studies to multiple regulatory testing programs encompassing requirements of regulatory bodies including the FDA, CE, PMDA, and CFDA. He is well-versed in a variety of test methods used to evaluate medical devices and has partnered with several customers to bring devices to market in North and South America, Europe and Asia.
In addition to laboratory work, Andrew has been an active member of ASTM’s Committee F04 on Medical and Surgical Materials and Devices for the past 6 years, contributing to the development of industry-leading standards.
He has been a guest lecturer for the University of Cincinnati and devotes his free time to tutoring students in math, science, and engineering.
He is registered as a Professional Engineer in the State of Ohio.
