Rod is an internationally renowned scientist with over 30 years experience in both experimental and analytical engineering mechanics research and consultancy on composite and other advanced materials.
Rod is Element's global leader for one of their most, in-demand technical disciplines - Fibre Reinforced Plastics (FRP). This has enabled Element to offer its leading edge FRP expertise to many of their international Oil & Gas, Automotive and Aerospace & Defense clients.
In terms of his past experiences Rod was invited to join NASA as an Exchange Visitor in 1989 after competing in an international competition for U.S. National Research Council funds. The initial period was only for two years however NASA successfully petitioned the U.S. State Department to waive the immigration ruling so the research conducted could continue.
The research Rod carried out for NASA involved developing new life prediction methodologies for composite structures, which included developing generic material characterisation tests, evaluating effects of impact damage, analysing composite structures and evaluating fracture mechanics based failure criteria determining effect of hostile environments on structural properties.
In addition to this Rod also possesses in depth expertise in finite element analysis; the operation of advanced testing systems; most modern main-frame and personal computers.
Rod is the current Chairman of the British Composites Society, which is a Division of the Institute of Materials.
