Industry Canada RF Exposure Requirements RSS 102

On March 19, 2015, Industry Canada published a new version of their RF Safety Standard.

RSS-102, Issue 5, Radio Frequency (RF) Exposure Compliance of Radiocommunication Apparatus (All Frequency Bands), sets out the requirements and measurement techniques used to evaluate radio frequency (RF) exposure compliance of radiocommunication apparatus designed to be used within the vicinity of the human body.

Upon publication of the RSS-102 standard to the Industry Canada website, the revised standard went into force immediately for the certification of new equipment. Any existing equipment that is imported or sold in Canada must be in compliance with RSS-102, Issue 5 within 180 days of publication on the Industry Canada website - no matter when they were originally certified. (Note that 180 days from publication is Sept 15, 2015.) The one exception is for devices that provide nerve stimulation. See Notice 2015-DRS001:  http://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/ceb-bhst.nsf/eng/tt00106.html

The changes are numerous and can be found here: http://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/smt-gst.nsf/eng/sf01904.html

Key changes to RSS-102 include SAR or MPE testing

The most notable changes are those to the exemption limits of Section 2.5. Devices that were previously exempt from SAR or MPE testing, may now require that testing.  Also, the power density limits for MPE estimates have changed. See Table 4 in the revised standard.
