Optical Emission Spectroscopy, or OES analysis, is a rapid method for determining the elemental composition of a variety of metals and alloys. Element’s chemical analysis labs are equipped and ready to evaluate the properties of your material, as well as support OES on your site.

OES analysis uses a sparking process, which involves applying an electrical charge to the sample, vaporizing a small amount of material. Once this spark occurs, a discharge plasma with a distinct chemical signature is created, allowing our experts to determine the elemental breakdown of the sample. The results of the analysis are given as a percentage breakdown of the constituent elements.

What is optical spectroscopy used for?

Optical emission spectroscopy is an ideal choice for applications where knowing the exact, quantitative breakdown of solid material is required. The best material types for OES analysis are metals that are soft enough to respond to the sparking process. Harder metals, which may be resistant to sparking, are better suited to other chemical analysis methods. The inherent accuracy and rapid delivery of results make OES analysis the ideal choice for lot verification testing of a wide range of alloys.

Arc Spark OES analysis

Spark optical emission spectrometers (S-OES) are the ideal instruments for metal analysis. Optical emission spectrometry using Arc/Spark excitation is the reference technique for rapid, elemental analysis of solid metallic samples.

Our Engaged Experts use the Arc Spark (point-to-plane) method to create an electrical spark that melts and evaporates the metal’s surface causing optical radiation with very specific frequencies (lines of emission). We provide metal composition analysis for the following application:

  • Iron & steel and its alloys
  • Aluminum and its alloys
  • Copper and its alloys

On-site OES analysis

As part of our on-site Metallographic Analysis, Element offers on-site Optical Emission Spectroscopy services for full chemical analyses of all metal alloys. We can measure the intensity of the frequencies through an optical system and determine the chemical composition of the metal at the surface. Our capabilities also include more challenging on-site analysis, covering the UV light elements, such as C, P, S, and Sn, where the test room is purged with 99.998% pure Argon.

For materials that cannot be transported or parts that cannot be removed, our on-site OES analysis offers cost-effective solutions while delivering fast and accurate results.
