The Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC) applies to most products placed on the market or put into service in the European Union that are considered to be machines (this usually includes professional equipment with moving parts powered by sources of energy other than human or animal effort, lifting machinery and accessories, safety components, and partly completed machines). One of the many pieces of mandatory CE marking product legislation, the Machinery Directive ensures product safety for everything from chain saws and pumps to earth moving machines and metal presses.

Under the directive, a machine is defined as an assembly (or group of assemblies) sharing a common control system, consisting of linked parts or components with a powered drive system and at least one moving element, joined together for a specific application or purpose. Element’s safety testing experts (link) can provide all the services needed to meet the requirements of the Machinery Directive. We assist manufacturers in meeting the key objectives necessary to enable the CE Marking of their machines and gain access to the EU, including:

  • Product Safety Testing to provide a presumption of conformity to the essential health and safety requirements of the Machinery Directive
  • Undertaking a risk assessment
  • Compilation of a Technical File
  • Completion of a Declaration of Conformity (DoC) or Declaration of Incorporation (DoI)

It is the responsibility of the manufacturer of relevant machinery to carry out the necessary tests on components, fittings or the completed machine to determine whether the machine can be safely put into service.

Safety Testing for the Machinery Directive

We offer impartial third party support to manufacturers in all aspects of the CE Marking Directive; from design consultation, full product safety testing, risk assessment guidance, Technical File compilation and documentation review. We help ensure that the equipment satisfies relevant health and safety requirements, and verify that the appropriate conformity assessment procedures have been followed.

Element can issue the third party qualification necessary to provide vital market advantage and confidence in placing a product on the market.

For those that need guidance on the regulatory requirements for a particular product we can provide Early Stage Qualification (ESQ®) services to support them through the testing and approval of their products and components. We also offer machinery focused training workshops to help you better understand and meet your machinery directive obligations.

Machinery Directive Notified Body Services

As a Notified Body under the Machinery Directive, we can provide testing needed to achieve certification, assistance with the compilation of a technical file, and support for ongoing quality assessment.

We also provide Notified body services for the following related directives:

  • EMC directive
  • Radio Equipment Directive (RED)
  • Medical Devices Directive
  • Explosive Atmospheres directive (ATEX)

The documentation that we issue is in a recognized format and thus should ensure universal acceptability by enforcement authorities throughout the EU.

It should be remembered that the incorrect CE marking of products can carry severe penalties both for the company and for the individual responsible for signing the DoC.

Machinery Directive Guidance

Because of the variety of equipment types that fall under the Machinery Directive, it can be a difficult requirement to understand. Electrical equipment is often also subject to the low voltage directive, EMC directive or both, and different product categories may have additional requirements. Our team of experts help ensure that you test to the right standards, and have all the documentation you need to successfully declare certification.

Further Safety Certification Services

Our Certification team provides the Certification Services required for Market Access for many countries throughout the world as well as Notified Body Services for Europe

As a Certification Body Test Laboratory (CBTL) and a National Certification Body (NCB) under the IECEE scheme, we can test and certify your electrical products to the IECEE certification scheme, which has significant market access advantages including reduce test costs and time to market.

Element's Global Approvals team provide further services to help those looking to export their products into the Global Market place.
