Therefore choosing the right polymeric material which can withstand and perform under such harsh environmental conditions is a primary requirement for anyone who supplies these materials to the Oil & Gas sector.  

Element offers a wide range of testing for the qualification and compatibility of polymeric materials (elastomers, thermoplastics and composites) exposed to production fluids at high pressure and high temperatures (HPHT) from our world class polymer testing facilities in Hitchin, UK and Houston, TX, USA.  

The testing services we offer include: 

  • Exposure to sweet and sour fluids, brines and other treatment fluids 
  • Rapid Gas Decompression (RGD) (also known as explosive decompression) under both sweet and sour environments 
  • Accelerated thermal and chemical ageing 
  • Service life estimation using Arrhenius and time temperature superposition (WLF) approaches 

With over 90 dedicated test stations offering autoclave/pressure vessels with remote control and monitoring of temperature and pressure, Element is in a unique position to provide quick turn around and short lead times to its clients. 

The HPHT exposure service is complemented by Element’s fully equipped mechanical testing and thermal analysis testing facilities to characterize the material behaviour both pre- and post-exposure, to quantify the influence of exposure on material performance.  

The mechanical tests (tension, compression, creep, stress relaxation and fatigue) we offer can be performed up to loads of 250 kN and across a temperature range of -190 to 250°C.  

Thermal analysis Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA), Thermo Mechanical Analysis (TMA), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Gas Chromotography (GC) and thermal conductivity measurement capabilities and services are also available from both our Hitchin and Houston laboratories. 

Tests can be performed to the ISO, ASTM, API and EN standards.
