LONDON, UK – December 20, 2021 – Element Materials Technology (Element) has been awarded the North and Eastern lot for the ‘Provision of Asbestos Monitoring and Analytical Services’ framework for Magnox Ltd. The contract is worth £5 million over two years and has the option to extend for a further two years.

The new contract means Element has responsibility for monitoring the asbestos abatement works and re-inspecting / surveying asbestos materials at all six northern and eastern sites. Responsibilities include the running of UKAS accredited laboratories at all sites and operating a team of more than 30 asbestos surveyors and analysts.

Magnox Ltd is a subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), responsible for decommissioning 12 nuclear sites and safely managing the waste generated from producing over 1,000TWh of nuclear power during their 60 years of operation. Asbestos represents a significant health and safety challenge in the decommissioning programme. Element is required to work closely with Magnox at all levels to ensure removal projects are well scoped and managed, with a satisfactory 4-stage clearance for project sign-off.

Matt Hopkinson, Element EVP EMEAA, said: “We’re honored to have been selected again by Magnox Ltd for this contract. Success in this bid reflects the hard work and technical excellence of our Element colleagues under the previous contract. We recognize the critical role we play in ensuring the health and safety of all personnel on Magnox sites with respect to asbestos.

“We look forward to working in collaboration with Magnox Ltd over the next two years as various sites move into phases of accelerated decommissioning in line with the NDA and Magnox Ltd. strategy.”

Pam Duerden, Magnox Ltd. Environment, Health, Safety, Security & Quality Director, said: “We are delighted to continue working with Element as part of our mission to fully decommission the Magnox sites across the UK. We are confident this contract represents excellent value for money for the UK taxpayer and are looking forward to Element bringing innovation and driving efficiency in the delivery of these vital safety support services.”
