Element Accelerates Qualification in Small Modular Reactor Equipment

Element Huntsville a strategic U.S. hub for advanced testing

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – October 26, 2026: Element Materials Technology (“Element”), one of the world’s leading providers of laboratory-based testing services, recently hosted a three-day NuScale supplier meeting in Huntsville, Alabama, designed to strengthen alignment ahead of upcoming qualification activities in nuclear testing.

The program focused on supplier readiness, Environmental Qualification (EQ) strategy, technical requirements, capacity planning, and future testing needs. It culminated in the commissioning of a new specialized equipment qualification test chamber to support critical testing of equipment used in NuScale’s small modular reactor.

Bringing nuclear equipment through qualification is a complex undertaking, demanding close coordination of testing, documentation, laboratory capacity, and supplier schedules.  Against that backdrop, Element’s technical team outlined the Environmental Qualification requirements and testing considerations suppliers need to navigate, as well as the company’s capabilities in qualification testing, materials evaluation, and program management.

Brad Ferguson, Director, AS&D PQT Sales at Element Materials Technology, said:

“Successful nuclear qualification requires early alignment across engineering teams, suppliers, laboratories, and schedules.  Bringing NuScale’s supplier network together with our technical teams helped us align on requirements and testing schedules well in advance.  Element can support everything from individual tests to full Environmental Qualification programs, backed by specialist expertise and capacity across our laboratory network.”

Graham Callaway, Senior Director, Supply Chain for NuScale, added:

“This joint supplier meeting at Element, followed by the grand opening of the equipment qualification test chamber, represented an important milestone in NuScale’s continued progress toward deployment of our SMR technology.”

The workshop builds on Element’s recent announcement of a major expansion at Huntsville, establishing the site as a strategic hub for advanced testing. Alongside its nuclear and SMR capabilities - including Environmental Qualification, dynamics, EMI/EMC, climatic testing, and LOCA simulation - the investment expands the facility’s infrastructure, engineering expertise, and capacity, enabling customers to undertake more of their critical qualification programs in one location.
