Ryan Arends

Dr. Ryan Arends is Associate Director at Element Iowa City, overseeing drug development and surveillance studies, high-throughput screening campaigns, and liquid handling operations, with a distinctive combination of microbiology expertise and computer programming fluency.
Experience
Dr. Ryan Arends is Associate Director at JMI Laboratories, part of Element Materials Technology and operating as Element Iowa City, where he oversees drug development and surveillance studies, publication generation, liquid handling systems, and high-throughput screening campaigns. His fluency in computer programming brings a distinctive capability to the laboratory’s analytical and operational workflows, enabling more efficient management of the complex data sets generated by large-scale surveillance and screening programs.
Prior to joining Element Iowa City, Dr. Arends was a Research Scientist II at Vertex Pharmaceuticals, where he was an integral member of the antimicrobial discovery team that progressed multiple scaffolds from HTS screening hits through to lead optimization compounds. In that role he was also responsible for optimizing and performing bacterial growth inhibition assays to support medicinal chemistry efforts – hands-on drug discovery experience that directly informs his current oversight of high-throughput screening programs.
Career Highlights
Dr. Arends has authored or co-authored over 20 peer-reviewed publications in microbiology and infectious diseases. His academic foundation – a PhD and postdoctoral fellowship in microbiology, both completed at the University of Iowa – placed him in the same scientific environment as several of his current Element Iowa City colleagues, and his transition from pharmaceutical industry drug discovery at Vertex to an oversight role spanning surveillance, drug development, and high-throughput screening reflects the breadth of his technical expertise.
