What is Thrust Testing at Element?

Thrust testing evaluates the performance, force output, and structural behavior of rocket propulsion systems under operational conditions. These tests help validate propulsion performance, system reliability, and qualification readiness for aerospace and defense applications.

At Element, thrust testing combines static fire testing, multi-axis force measurement, cryogenic fluid handling, and high-pressure propulsion infrastructure to support rocket engine development, qualification, and performance validation programs.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between static fire testing and hot-fire testing?

Static fire testing holds a propulsion system stationary while firing it at full thrust to measure axial force, ignition transients, and shutdown behavior. Hot-fire testing is a broader term covering any test in which a propulsion system runs at operational temperatures and pressures – it includes static fire but also longer-duration performance characterization and qualification runs.

Can Element support both liquid and cryogenic propulsion systems?

Yes. Element's San Bernardino facility handles cryogenic media including liquid hydrogen, liquid oxygen, methane, and nitrogen, with temperature capability down to -452 °F, and supports both pressure-fed and pump-fed liquid propulsion systems.

What thrust range can Element measure?

Up to 50,000 lbf single-axis, with 8,000 lbf side/asymmetric load measurement for multi-axis configurations. Two rocket testing platforms are designed for 20,000 lbf-class engines.

Is Element's propulsion lab accredited?

Yes. Element San Bernardino holds A2LA accreditation (Certificate 0214.45) to ISO/IEC 17025 for environmental, mechanical, and high-pressure fluid testing of aerospace components, and operates to ASME and API piping codes.

Can you accommodate customer-supplied test articles and bespoke test plans?

Yes. Element supports customer-defined test profiles, witnessed testing, video and high-speed data capture, and remote viewing where required by program security or scheduling.
