Effective filtering of interfaces is crucial for reducing electromagnetic interference (EMI) and ensuring stable operation. By identifying noise paths and coupling mechanisms, designers can implement strategies to minimize noise generation and propagation.

Mohamed will investigate some pitfalls of filter design and identify practical design considerations including component selection and layout and tracking. Simulation tools like REDEXPERT play a vital role in validating filter designs as well as optimizing filter components.  

The product navigator tool will also be presented to identify proposed filters for a wide variety of interfaces (power, analogue and data).

11:15-12:00 CE Marking of Military Equipment, Steve Hayes, Technical Director ‑ Connected Technologies, Element    

Once considered the domain of commercial products, CE marking is increasingly important for defence manufacturers. As EU legislation evolves, exemptions narrow, and the line between civilian and military applications continues to blur, the assumption that defence equipment sits outside the scope of CE marking no longer holds.  In this session, Steve will cover:  

• The current regulatory landscape, including EMC requirements and the European Commission's evolving position on military exemptions   

•  Why MoD expectations, legal precedent, and Article 346 challenges have pushed this issue up the agenda   

•  When CE marking applies to defence equipment, including the critical distinction between "placing on the market" and "putting into service"   

•  How to navigate harmonised standards, build technical documentation, and embed compliance into design and procurement   

•  Practical steps to manage CE marking across complex supply chains and long programme lifecycles

13:00-14:00 EMI Debugging of a Flyback Converter, Mohamed AlAlami, Field Application Engineering | Senior Field Application Engineer, Würth Electronics UK    

Mohamed will share a case study of a DC/DC Flyback converter, the EMI issues associated with the design and how it can be de-bugged in logical steps, both the theory and practical live measurements. There will be a demonstration and use of a dual channel LISN to then identify which type of noise was being emitted and then the appropriate EMI solutions being implemented and their impact.

14:30-15:30 MIL-STD-461H: What's Changed, Why It Matters, and How to Prepare, James MacAlonan, Principal EMC Engineer, Element    

MIL-STD-461H represents the latest evolution of the U.S. military's electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standard, introducing updates that reflect emerging technologies, modern platform architectures, and evolving operational requirements. This presentation provides an overview of the key changes from MIL-STD-461G, highlighting the area’s most likely to affect OEM’s, EMC engineers, and test laboratories.    

The presentation will examine revisions to test requirements, procedures, and compliance expectations, and discuss their impact on qualification programmes and test planning. Attendees will gain a clear understanding of the practical implications of the updated standard and learn how to prepare projects and products for a smooth transition to MIL-STD-461H compliance.
