Connected Technology Talks Podcast 15 - IEC 60079 Part 0 for non-electrical products

An industrial basement with a pump system

In this episode, Element certification engineer Jayson Shepherd and senior technical specialist Simon Barrowcliff break down recent developments in IEC 60079‑0 (Explosive atmospheres - Part 0: Equipment - General requirements) and its application to non‑electrical equipment. They clarify long‑standing confusion around how Part 0 integrates with the ISO/EN 80079‑36 and 80079‑37 standards and explain the latest decisions from international certification bodies.

Why listen to this podcast?

  • Understand the rules for non‑electrical equipment certification, especially where manufacturers have previously relied on historic EN 13463 standards
  • Avoid delays and non‑compliances by knowing which 60079‑0 clauses apply to your equipment before submitting for certification
  • Gain clarity on ATEX implications, including likely alignment between notified bodies following recent IECEx rulings
  • Hear practical guidance from experts involved in the IECEx discussions, with tips for manufacturers upgrading legacy certificates

Key topics covered in this podcast

  • What changed when non‑electrical equipment became part of the IECEx standards?
  • Should manufacturers always apply IEC 60079‑0 alongside ISO 80079‑36/37?
  • What was the final conclusion from the IECEx meetings in Scotland (2023), 2024, and Japan regarding the use of Part 0?
  • How will the new requirement affect all new IECEx certifications going forward?
  • What does this mean for existing certificates- do they need updating?
  • How will ATEX notified bodies respond, and will their approach align with IECEx?
  • How can manufacturers determine which 60079‑0 clauses apply, using the table in ISO 80079‑36?
  • What steps should companies take when transferring or upgrading legacy EN 13463 certificates?

Listen to the podcast below.

"The conclusion is that the 60079-0 standard has to be applied with the 80079 series standards as well. You can't leave it off. So what ICEX have said is that for all new certifications you would expect the IEC 60079 standard to be applied, so there should be a test report to it within the pack, and it should be listed on the certificate."
