Element helps you bring audio/video, information and communication technology products to global markets. Our IEC 62368-1 testing and certification services give you a single test program recognized across Europe, the UK, North America and beyond. Whether you are transitioning legacy designs or launching new technology, Element helps you meet hazard-based safety requirements while reducing cost and time to market.

What is IEC 62368-1 Product Safety Testing at Element?
IEC 62368-1 is the international product safety standard for audio/video, information and communication technology (AV/ICT) equipment. It replaces IEC 60950-1 and IEC 60065 and uses a hazard-based safety engineering (HBSE) approach that identifies energy sources and applies safeguards to reduce the risk of injury, fire and property damage.
Element tests and certifies audio/video, information and communication technology products to IEC 62368-1 for global markets. Our services span design review, energy source assessment, compliance testing and certification, supporting CE Marking, UKCA Marking, IECEE CB Scheme certification and US NRTL and Canadian SCC certification

Methods and solutions offered
Methods and solutions offered
Our engineers support every stage of the compliance journey, from early design through certification. We review designs against required safeguards and evaluations, and identify compliance risks before they lead to costly redesigns. For products moving from IEC 60950-1 or IEC 60065, we compare the legacy standards against IEC 62368-1 and map the changes to construction, components, markings and testing, giving your team a clear route to updated products.
Products and technologies we support
Products and technologies we support
We test a wide range of AV/ICT equipment, including consumer electronics, displays, servers, network and data center infrastructure, telecommunications equipment and professional broadcast systems. Coverage spans products within the scope of IEC 62368-1, including battery-powered, mains-powered and remotely powered devices. We also support connected products that require safety, EMC, wireless, and cybersecurity testing, coordinating a single program across our laboratories rather than with several suppliers.

Frequently asked questions
Which products fall within the scope of IEC 62368-1?
IEC 62368-1 covers audio/video, information and communication technology equipment rated up to 600 V, including computing products, displays, consumer electronics, telecommunications equipment and office appliances, whether used in homes, offices, data centers or professional environments.
What are the safety requirements for audio/video, information and communication technology equipment according to IEC 62368-1 Part 1?
IEC 62368-1 sets safety requirements using a hazard-based approach. You identify the energy sources in a product, classify each source by the amount of energy it can transfer, and apply safeguards that protect ordinary, instructed and skilled persons from electric shock, fire, burns and mechanical injury. The standard grades each energy source into three classes, from Class 1, which does not cause pain, to Class 3, which can cause injury, and it sets rules for insulation, creepage and clearance distances, component selection, construction, and the markings and instructions a product needs to demonstrate compliance.
Which edition of IEC 62368-1 should my product be evaluated to?
The applicable edition depends on your target markets and certification requirements, as national and regional adoptions of IEC 62368-1 may not transition simultaneously. In some cases, compliance with the latest edition may be required, while in others an earlier adopted edition remains acceptable. Element can help determine the most appropriate compliance strategy for your target markets, including support for NRTL certification, SCC certification, participation in the IECEE CB Scheme, and other international approval programs.
When will IEC 62368-1 Edition 4 become mandatory?
Enforcement timing differs by region, and there is no single global date. In North America, UL and CSA 62368-1 fourth edition becomes the required basis for certification on February 15, 2027. Products already certified to the third edition can continue during the transition if they have no major changes. In Europe, no mandatory date is set. The European fourth edition, EN IEC 62368-1:2024, is not yet cited in the EU Official Journal, so it does not give presumption of conformity for CE marking. The second edition remains cited, and the timing rests with the European Commission. Until then, use a risk-based approach with technical documentation.
Can Element certify my product for North America?
Yes. Element provides NRTL certification to UL 62368-1 for the United States and SCC-accredited certification to CSA C22.2 No. 62368-1 for Canada, along with CB Scheme reports to support approvals in other markets.
Do I need to retest products previously certified to IEC 60950-1 or IEC 60065?
Not necessarily. The need for additional evaluation depends on your target markets, certification requirements and any product design changes. Products previously certified to legacy standards may require evaluation to IEC 62368-1 when seeking new certifications, entering additional markets, or maintaining compliance with current market requirements. In many cases, a gap assessment can leverage existing test data and documentation, limiting additional testing to requirements affected by changes in the standard or product design.
